The Italian group BF will cultivate 36,000 hectares of land in Algeria.

The most important Italian agro-industrial project on the southern shore of the Mediterranean is starting in Algeria with the sowing of the first 3,000-hectare plot in the Timimoun region.

AGI – Bonifiche Ferraresi (BF), the leader of the Italian agro-industrial supply chain, is preparing to implement the agreement in the field of high-tech regenerative agriculture signed two years ago by the Algerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Chorfa. Beginning in November, in the desert region of Timimoun, in the south of the North African country, BF will start sowing 3,000 hectares of land: this will be the first autumn sowing of durum wheat carried out on land that BF has reclaimed from the desert, thanks to the construction of wells, essential for setting up a modern drip irrigation system.

The project – the result of a partnership between BF International and the Algerian National Investment Fund (FNI) – will first focus on these 3,000 hectares, followed by the cultivation of 10,000 hectares of dry legumes. This is only part of a larger plan aiming to use 36,000 hectares for the production of durum wheat, pulses, and pasta. The plan is at the core of a detailed partnership agreement signed yesterday at the FNI headquarters – the financial arm of the Algerian government – in Algiers, in the presence of the Fund’s Director General, Kamel Mansouri, and the CEO of the Italian agricultural company, Federico Vecchioni.
